Violin Girl painting finished

It's finished in time and I took it down to the Conservatory of the Ozarks this afternoon where it will be on display and available for sale. This Friday from 5 to 9pm stop by the conservatory and view all the music related artwork and enjoy the Conservatory's singers. The Conservatory of the Ozarks is located in Chesterfield Village and the address is 2132 West Chesterfield Boulevard Suite 103 & 104D Springfield, MO.

The painting took me well over 60 hours due to it's complexity with the hair and the overall size. I was planning on making the background a lighter blue but it ended up being the bluish purple. Next up is another pet portrait!

- Here's a shout out to Brian for letting me use the wonderful photo for reference. Visit his Flickr page here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/coltfan909

Here is the newest painting that I'm working on. It is of a girl playing violin. The reference picture (shown above) that I'm working off of is taken by Brian also known as Coltfan909. The painting is one of the biggest I've painted in a while the dimensions are 34 x 48 inches (photo below). I'm doing the painting for the Conservatory of the Ozarks in Chesterfield Village located in Springfield, MO. They teach piano, guitar, violin, and also have vocal lessons. They are showing artwork at the conservatory on December 18th so the painting has to be done with by then.

Smoking Caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland painting

This is the finished painting at least for now. Might do some extra tweaking before the show in November. I really wanted to have the caterpillar spewing out smoke but after much trial and error I ended up with this. Really like how the hookah and the caterpillar turned out. MIght see if I can get a better photo tomorrow. Next I'll be working on a pet portrait then I'll start the next Alice in Wonderland painting. Thinking about doing the Queen of Hearts next.

Dr. Cyclopea

Currently working on some images for a client of this retro look at a pulp classic sci-fi horror movie called Dr. Cyclops. Instead of the lead character being a man it is now a woman who resembles christina ricci. The new version is entitled Dr Cyclopea. In the movie Dr Cyclops shrinks a group of scientists with radiation and endless chaos insues.

Anyway check out the rehash!!!

Kelly McKernan's artwork

I've decided that every once in a while probably once a month I will show someone's artwork that I'm a fan of. Kelly McKernan who also goes by Leliophelia is an artist who does mixed media work. Some of the materials that she uses are photography, gouache, and watercolor, and other various materials. Kelly's artwork is very saturated, texturized and has a very dreamy movement to it.

I've included a few images of Kelly McKernan's artwork but encourage you to view her website at link or her blog which is located at link

All artwork shown is copyrighted by Kelly McKernan and cannot be used without her permission

Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, Oklahoma

Whenever I visit a bigger city the chance to see an art museum is usually something on the top of my list. This weekend on my trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma I made a visit to the Philbrook Museum of Art. The museum is located in a very nice area in the city and meshes itself right into the current surroundings. The Philbrook is a 72 room mansion converted into an art museum. The collection of the museum is rather small but I was very interested in seeing the Bouguereau painting(see atached photo) since he is one of my favorite artists. If you've never visited an art museum there is nothing like viewing an artists labor right in front of you instead of located in a book. Anyway, there collection is on 3 levels of the house. The main floor houses the European paintings and Italian Renaissance. On the top is the modern art and the american paintings. The lower level has mostly native american paintings.

The main attraction to the museum is when you step out of the great hall and view an amazing and intricately laid out garden and sculpture walk. The garden is located on 23 acres that include a pond, stream, bridges, fountains, sculptures, and many places to sit and enjoy nature. I've included some photos so you can enjoy some of it's grandeur!

You can view the Philbrook's website at http://www.philbrook.org/

Smoking Caterpillar painting progress 1

Finished with the caterpillar but might have to change the color of the caterpillar to blue digitally when it gets put into book form since it specifically says the caterpillar is blue in Alice in Wonderland. Should be fine to display though. The caterpillar that I referenced for the painting is called a Common Yellow Swallowtail. I'm very happy with the mushroom. Can't wait to get to the background with all the smoke around poor Alice.

She must be a little frightened.

Smoking Caterpillar sketch for Alice in Wonderland painting

Decided to go with a realistic caterpillar looking over a mushroom at little Alice. The caterpillar is blowing out smoke which should make a neat background for the painting. The caterpillar will be very detailed and mostly white with orange, green, and black in it.

Stay tuned for more Alice in Wonderland!

Joy Stone Illustration 3 - Tortoise and Princess Sighing Dove

This is the 3rd illustration for the children's book the Joy Stone. Not as happy with this one as the other two. I do like how the tortoise turned out though. This is one of the 1st scenes in the Joy Stone where Princess Sighing Dove is talking to the turtle and comparing how they are alike.

Joy Stone illustration 1 - Princess Sighing Dove

This is the 1st illustration spec for the Joy Stone children's book. The picture is of Princess Sighing Dove who is the main character in the story. She is very sad because she grew up without her mother and has never known true happiness. I was going to use watercolors but decided to go with colored pencils.
